Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) compounding

Styrene butadiene rubber was developed in the first half of the last century. Its use expanded during World War II when natural rubber became unavailable. SBR has since become the most commonly used synthetic rubber.

SBR rubber properties

SBR has good abrasion and good aging resistance when protected by additives. Its heat, oil and abrasion resistance is better than natural rubber.

Styrene butadiene rubber applications

While SBR is widely used in vehicle tires, applications for Preferred’s customers vary widely including conveyor belts, industrial hoses, various molded and extruded rubber goods, footwear, adhesives, floor tiles, gaskets and sheet rubber goods.

Preferred Compounding compounds styrene butadiene rubber for a variety of customer applications. We produce SBR in sheets, slab, strip and calendared.Preferred

SBR rubber trade names

SBR is made under many trade names and varieties by companies around the world. Our technical staff can help determine which product and elastomer grade is right for your custom-compounded recipe.

SBR suppliers include: ISP Elastomers (International Specialty Products; Duradene™ from Firestone Polymers; American Synthetic; Tufdene™ and Asaprene™ from Ashai Kasei Corp.; COPO® and CARBOMIX® SBR from Lion Copolymer; Soflex from Goodyear Chemical; Afsol from Karbochem; Buna VSL from Lanxess; Europrene™ from Polimeri Europa; Sprintan™ from Styron and Nipol™ SBR from Zeon Corporation.

Other styrene butadiene rubber producers are Chi Mei Corp., Dynasol Elastomeros, JSR Corporation, Kumho Petrochemical, Michelin, Sibur Holding, SINOPEC, LG Chemical and INSA from the Chemical Sector of Grupo KUO.

Custom rubber compounding

Preferred Compounding is a full service custom rubber compounder. As a Preferred customer/partner, you gain access to our comprehensive support resources.

Full service and support

Preferred’s technical services staff includes chemists with decades of experience. They formulate and optimize custom elastomeric compounds to achieve the desired field performance, manufacturability and cost for your compounds.

Through the custom compounding recipe, we can engineer the extent and rate of curing, processing characteristics, final properties, performance and cost.

10,000 compounding ingredients

We work with more than 10,000 compounding polymers and other ingredients and more than 100 rubber mixing and processing variables.

We produce compounded elastomers in strips, slabs, pellets and calendered sheet. We also provide filtering by gear-pump straining.
